Beilein skipped school due to broken heart day after '68 World Series

ANN ARBOR -- John Beilein remembers missing one day of school as a kid.

It wasn't when he had a 103-degree fever. His mother still made him go that day.

But his mother gave her son a break Oct. 11, 1968, a Friday, the day after his beloved St. Louis Cardinals lost Game 7 of the World Series to the Detroit Tigers.

Beilein's mom knew her 15-year-old son had been boasting at high school when the Cardinals took a 3-1 series lead and that he'd cried when Tim McCarver popped out to end Game 7. So he was allowed to stay home for a day.
