Behind Megan Besta, Michigan softball has won 17 straight

When the Michigan softball team starts the Big Ten tournament Friday, it will be the overwhelming favorite. That’s what happens when you lose just two conference games all year, both by one run.

But to win it, No. 2-ranked U-M will need junior pitcher Megan Betsa to be a star.

That’s what she has been for her 10 straight wins. She has a 1.76 ERA, is 13-2 in Big Ten play and leads the nation with 11.8 strikeouts per game overall.

But it has taken time to get there.

“Megan was up-and-down early in the year, inconsistent with a lot of walks,” U-M coach Carol Hutchins said on today’s Big Ten teleconference.
