Michigan Football Recruiting News: Wolverines A Finalist For 4-Star WR, Impressing 5-Star OT & More

The Michigan Wolverines are putting together their final preparations ahead of their matchup against South Carolina in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day, but there is plenty of off-field rumors swirling around the program prior to that game - especially when it comes to recruiting. Here are all the latest Michigan football recruiting news and rumors that you need to know:

Wolverines impressing 5-star OT
Michigan held their practices for the Outback Bowl at Berkeley Prep in Tampa, the high school of five-star offensive tackle target Nicholas Petit-Frere. The Wolverines are in a heated race with Alabama, Florida, and Notre Dame, among others for his services, but Petit-Frere said getting to see Michigan up close was "impressive" and "amazing."

The 6-foot-6, 272-pounder is ranked as the No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2018 class, according to the 247sports Composite.

4-star WR has Michigan in top three
Four-star wide receiver JaMarr Chase (Metairie, LA) revealed his top three schools ahead of the Under Armour All-American game, and Michigan made the cut.

“I have Michigan, Auburn, LSU… that’s for sure a locked three,” said Chase. “I’m just waiting for those three the most. They’re all the same right now because it’s so hard right now. It’s a lot going on for me. LSU is putting on most of the pressure just because it’s the home school. And then Michigan and Auburn are coming in telling me they want me to do this and (that). It’s a lot of stuff you’re hearing. I don’t have a problem with it. I just have to make sure I’m cool with that and play my game.

“It was beautiful out there,” Chase said of his official visit to Michigan on Nov. 25. “My first time ever being out there… I fell in love with it. I didn’t really know what to expect when I got up there. It amazed me. So now I’m just going to wait until signing day to see what I’m going to do.”

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder is ranked as the No. 15 wide receiver and No. 75 overall prospect in the 2018 class.

Wolverines the favorite for 2019 OL
Offensive tackle Karsen Barnhart (Paw Paw, MI) is one of the top 2019 prospects in the state of Michigan and, despite not getting an offer from Michigan when he camped there last summer, they remain his dream school.

“It was great,” Barnhart told The Michigan Insider of his camp experience. “I just loved the feel of the campus. I also loved the way the coaching staff was and how (Offensive Coordinator) Coach (Tim) Drevno is as a coach.”

“[An offer] would be a dream come true. They have always been one of those dream schools to me.”

The 6-foot-4, 282-pounder does have offers from Indiana, Iowa State, and Michigan State, among others.
