Michigan Fall Camp News: Team Captains Announced, Harbaugh Gives Scholarships To Walk-Ons & More

The Michigan Wolverines are approaching the end of fall camp with the season opener now just days away. As such, the final aspects of the depth chart and roster are being sorted out, with Jim Harbaugh and the team naming this season's captains. Here are the latest news & rumors on Michigan football

Mike McCray, Mason Cole named team captains
Linebacker Mike McCray and offensive lineman Mason Cole have been voted team captains by their teammates, several players announced on Twitter.

McCray is the lone returning defensive starter for the Wolverines and was named the preseason Butkus Award watch list, which is given to the nation's best linebacker. The fifth-year senior recorded 76 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss. 4.5 sacks and two interceptions last season.

Cole, a senior, has started along the offensive line ever since he was a freshman and will be making the transition from center to tackle this year.

Pair of walk-ons receive scholarship offers
Running back Joe Hewlett and safety Jordan Glasgow, both walk-ons, were given scholarships by Jim Harbaugh this weekend.

Hewlett only had two carries last season but performed well in the spring game, running the ball eight times for 35 yards. He has followed that up with a strong camp but is not among the top four backs on the depth chart.

Glasgow played in every game last season - mostly on special teams - and recorded 12 tackles. He's expected to have a similar role this season.

Wolverines pursuing top 2018 OLB
Now, for a recruiting update. Michigan has heavily recruited linebackers each of the last two recruiting cycles but are continuing a strong pursuit of J.J. Peterson (Moultrie, GA), the top-rated outside linebacker in the 2018 class.

Peterson told 247sports that he plans to take an official visit to Michigan this season, but the Wolverines are not thought to be one of the favorites to land him. Alabama and Auburn are his top two schools at this time.

The 6-foot-1.5, 210-pounder is ranked as the No. 42 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247sports Composite Rankings.
