The Rivals and ESPN guys all share their identity, share videos they recorded from practices, and share interviews they had with players which any recruit could easily step up and say that the writer lied about... The skeptic in me also finds it hard to believe that if all your info was accurate that your sources would keep providing it to you because it could be damaging to the program if you share what plays the team is going to run or that Michigan is recruiting a player hard that they dont want other big ten schools to know about

True about the ego but sometimes even that makes me laugh. The personality that some of the writers there have really shines through. That's the thing about being a writer.
