Michigan football news: Courtney Avery to return vs Notre Dame

Latest Michigan football news: Starting safety Courtney Avery, a former CB who converted to see more playing time, will return to the field vs. Notre Dame this weekend, says Michigan head coach Brady Hoke.

Avery, who had a minor knee surgery on August 24th, has been running around on the playing field, said Hoke, and will compete for his starting spot again, likely splitting time with sophomore Jarrod Wilson who started in his absence last week. Avery most known by Michigan fans for his 2011 interception on Ohio State's final drive, securing a Michigan victory and snapping a 7 game losing streak to the Buckeyes.

"It would probably be Jarrod and Courtney in an even split," Hoke said.

Michigan can certainly use him this weekend against Irish QB Tommy Rees. Rees, who is making his 2nd start against the Wolverines, torched the Michigan secondary in 2011, going 27-39 for 315 yards and 3 TD's in the epic last minute Wolverine victory. Michigan was down both starting safeties in the opener against CMU, with Thomas Gordon missing the game due to a violation of team rules.
