Woody Widenhofer, ex-Detroit Lions, Michigan State, Pittsburgh Steelers assistant, dies

Woody Widenhofer, who spent nearly four decades coaching football, and was one of the engineers of the Steel Curtain in the NFL, died on Sunday at the age of 77.

One of Widenhofer's daughters, Stacy Miller, told the St. Louis Dispatch on Monday that Widenhofer died in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after suffering two strokes in the past month, including one Saturday.

Widenhofer played linebacker at Riverview before going to Missouri in 1961, where he played collegiately.
