Will of a champion: Deptford High School football overcomes odds for 1st title in 18 years

PINE HILL – The Deptford High School football team lost on a halfback pass on fourth-and-goal against Gloucester on Oct. 7.

It fell to Glassboro the following week on a game-ending, two-point conversion in overtime.

Tears were shed, and hope diminished.

“Those losses hurt,” senior Mikey Long said. “Everybody was against us. Our backs was against the wall.”

The Spartans’ season came down to Saturday at Overbrook. A victory meant a share of their first division championship in 18 years and kept their playoff dreams alive.

It’s why with the game on the line, first-year head coach Patrick Landis went for it all.
