Back in the spring, Michigan State football had to figure out how to replace three starters from the 2021 group, but didn’t even have enough healthy bodies to do so.

Friday's season-opening win over Western Michigan is a step in the right direction, but there appears to be a ways yet to go.

The 35-13 victory was the first true chance to see what the new unit would look like and while head coach Mel Tucker was pleased in part with the group’s performance, it was still not yet at “the standard” he holds his team to.
