Michigan State football tight ends coach Ted Gilmore gives each of his players a leash and two options – choke yourself or have free rein.

Of course, there isn’t an actual leash, there’s no chance for suffocation, and he wouldn’t do anything to put his players in harm’s way. But there’s plenty of truth to Gilmore’s mantra, encompassed by the opportunity for freedom.

“That saying means, ‘I’m going to let you do your thing, but you can hurt yourself if you go too far,’” said former Wisconsin wide receiver Alex Erickson, who played for Gilmore in 2015 and is now with the Cincinnati Bengals.
