Sloppy start: Spartans win opener, 28-13

East Lansing – It was a win, and getting Michigan State to apologize for that simply won’t be coming anytime soon.

But the 12th-ranked Spartans hardly wowed anyone in their 28-13 victory over Furman on Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

LJ Scott ran for 105 yards on 20 carries and Tyler O’Connor threw three touchdown passes for the Spartans (1-0), but 10 penalties — three personal fouls — and plenty of sloppy play left many of the 74,516 at Spartan Stadium hoping for more.

Michigan State has next week off before heading to Notre Dame, and there is plenty of work to be done before then.
