MSU Interim President Engler says 'not our intent' to ask state to pitch in on settlement

LANSING, MI a MSU Interim President John Engler met with House of Representatives leaders on Thursday, but told reporters afterward he was not there to ask the state to chip in on the $500 million settlement with victims of ex-doctor Larry Nassar announced Wednesday.

"It's not our intent to do that. We're not here to ask for that," he said.

He said the university had still not made decisions on how to pay for the settlement but is taking the first step of turning to its insurance companies.

"They were part of the mediation at every step of the way and we now would hope to be able to work out that contribution from them, which they are contractually obligated to provide, so we'll see how that goes and we'll obviously look at, then, how we do deal with a settlement that's pretty substantial," Engler said.
