Michigan State's offense nearly wastes another stellar defensive game

EAST LANSING — Chris Solari rates the Spartans on a scale of 1 to 10 after their 14-10 victory over Rutgers on Saturday.

Offense: 2

There were mostly empty yards, with bad starting position leading to drives stalling around midfield. Receivers got minimal separation. Rocky Lombardi struggled with his decision-making and passing. Running backs failed to hit holes hard and got tripped up when they opened. Every attempted trick play failed until Cody White's end-around run gave MSU the go-ahead points with inside of 4 minutes to play.

Defense: 8

MSU’s defense chased Rutgers QB Giovanni Rescigno for much of the day, though the Warren De La Salle grad did make a few plays with his feet to evade pressure.
