Michigan State's Cassius Winston named Big Ten player of the year

EAST LANSING — Cassius Winston is Michigan State basketball’s ninth Big Ten Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-1 junior point guard received the award Monday afternoon, the seventh to receive the honor in Tom Izzo’s 24 seasons.

A unanimous All-Big Ten first-team pick, Winston ranks fourth in the Big Ten at 19.0 points and first with 7.6 assists per game this season heading into the postseason. Only Maurice Ager in 2005-06 (19.3 points) and Denzel Valentine in 2015-16 (19.
