When you look for an athletic director, qualities such as integrity, intellectuality, creativity, a love for sports and an ability to be personable stick out as must-haves. Michigan State sought all these qualities in an outside candidate for athletic director, but came up short.

Interim president John Engler admitted the nationwide search, which was announced not long ago, would mean all internal candidates would be crossed off the list, never actually happened. His staff was supposed to search externally to find the next best fit for athletic director after Mark Hollis’ sudden resignation earlier this year.
