Brian Lewerke's streak of 20 consecutive starts ended last week.
The redshirt junior quarterback remained on the sideline wearing a headset (except when serving as the holder) as redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi led Michigan State to a 23-13 win against Purdue in his first start.
Lewerke is dealing with an injured right throwing shoulder he suffered in an Oct. 13 win at Penn State and played through in a loss to Michigan the following week. The Spartans (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) play at Maryland (5-3, 3-2) on Saturday (noon, ESPN2) and it's unclear who will start at quarterback.
