Brian Lewerke felt Michigan State football’s faint flicker of hope faded on the first play of Saturday’s fourth quarter in Michigan Stadium.

The senior quarterback lined up under center to go for it on fourth-and-1, the Spartans already trailing Michigan by 17 points.

A.J. Arcuri, who had not been in on the drive at the end of the third quarter, took over at left tackle after the break.
