Game notes: It’s the annual battle for potentially the Big Ten’s most disgusting rivalry trophy: The Old Brass Spittoon. First awarded in 1950, the Spittoon — which supposedly dates back to the 1800s, when it was filled with, well, spit — has gone to the Spartans 50 of the 64 times it has been at stake, including last season. MSU has lost the Spittoon to Illinois just four times this century: 2001, 2006, 2016 and, most recently, 2020 when the Illinois shut out the Spartans, 24-0.
