The annual battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy turned chippy, if not ugly on Saturday, as Michigan football and Michigan State footballcombined for six unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

The most notable came with 14:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, when MSU defensive end Jacub Panasiuk was ejected for a late hit on U-M quarterback Shea Patterson, which was termed a “flagrant foul” by referee Daniel Capron.

The chippiness built all game.

MSU’s Shakur Brown was called for a late hit on Michigan’s first touchdown drive late in the first quarter, and MSU’s first drive of the second quarter featured three unsportsmanlike calls.
