Mateen Cleaves' attorney wants Wayne prosecutors disqualified

The attorney representing Mateen Cleaves wants the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office disqualified from the sexual assault case against the former basketball star.

Cleaves' attorney, Frank Manley, filed court documents shortly before the court closed Monday, on the eve of a scheduled hearing to determine if the case proceeds to trial. In one document, the defense alleges that the 24-year-old woman Cleaves is accused of sexually assaulting in September has served as a member of the Wayne County Child Sexual Abuse Task Force.

Cleaves’ case was transferred to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office in October after the Genesee County prosecutor requested the move because of a possible conflict of interest with a potential witness in the case, officials said.
