LJ Scott reeled in a nine-yard pass for a first down. Darrell Stewart rushed for eight yards on first down, and after Scott was stuffed on third down, Lewerke wasn't able to to reach the marker on a designed quarterback run on third-and-short.

Coghlin misses field goal try
After coming up short of a first down at the Northwestern 33, MSU decided to roll the dice on third-and-3, and Brian Lewerke hit Darrell Stewart for a seven-yard gain.
