How MSU hoops was able to attend Cotton Bowl

EAST LANSING – As the Michigan State men’s basketball team bus rolled into the Dallas suburb of Duncanville, Texas on Thursday, Matt McQuaid came to life.

The MSU freshman guard knew he and his teammates would be attending the Cotton Bowl national football semifinal later that night between MSU and Alabama. But it wasn’t until a day earlier that coach Tom Izzo dropped this surprise on him – the Spartans would hold a full practice at Duncanville High, in front of his former teammates and coach, Corey Chism.

“It was awesome,” McQuaid said.

“He was the man of the town,” MSU senior guard Denzel Valentine said of McQuaid during the ride through his hometown.
