How Michigan State football's defense under Mel Tucker blends old, new concepts

Kalon Gervin admitted “everything doesn’t come overnight” in developing as a college football player.

The sophomore cornerback and the rest of his Michigan Statefootball teammates had about two fortnights to schematically revamp their defense.

New coach Mel Tucker and new defensive coordinator Scottie Hazelton arrived in February, preparing to overhaul the Spartans’ system — moving from Mark Dantonio’s base 4-3 package with three linebackers to a 4-2-5 that emphasized speed with an extra defensive back.

Somehow, with not even a month’s worth of full-contact practice, MSU is pulling it off rather seamlessly.
