How Mark Dantonio retired late enough to get $4.3 million bonus, too late to get extra $1M

EAST LANSING — The timing of Mark Dantonio's retirement as Michigan State football coach means he's guaranteed a $4.3 million bonus, but no clear contract moving forward in a new role.

Dantonio's employment agreement, most recently updated in 2017, lays out that if he had left before Jan. 15, 2020, he would have netted at least $1 million through a one-year contract in some role within MSU Athletics.
