Ferguson won't seek re-election to Michigan State board

Joel Ferguson — the longest serving member of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees — announced Wednesday that he is not seeking re-election.

Ferguson, a longtime Lansing-based developer and high-profile Democrat, said he is not running for another term in November because he wants to concentrate on his development projects underway across the state, including one in Detroit.

Besides his development work and service to MSU, Ferguson is a businessman, educator and philanthropist who was first elected in 1986. His term expires in January.

"In addition to focusing on my development projects, I am actively supporting efforts to elect Democrats," Ferguson said.
