Bill Beekman was surprised when he was asked to take over as Michigan State's interim athletic director.
What the university vice president considered a temporary role five months ago is turning into a full-time assignment. Beekman is expected to be named the permanent athletic director on Monday by the Michigan State Board of Trustees, a source told MLive on Friday night.
Beekman was named interim athletic director on Feb. 5 by Michigan State interim president John Engler. That came after athletic director Mark Hollis stepped down on Jan. 26.
The change at the top of the department came during a tumultuous time for Michigan State, amid the scandal involving Larry Nassar that resulted in a NCAA inquiry.
