MLB punishes the Marlins' Dan Straily and Don Mattingly for Posey plunking; Giants get off scot-free

Marlins pitcher Dan Straily and manager Don Mattingly have received suspensions by Major League Baseball for their involvement in Tuesday’s incidents in San Francisco in which two batters were hit by pitches.

Straily received a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine while Mattingly was given a one-game suspension and fined “for the intentional actions of Straily while warnings were in place,” the league said.

A source said Straily plans to appeal his suspension.

Straily’s plunking of Giants catcher Buster Posey came one inning after Giants pitcher Dereck Rodriguez hit Lewis Brinson with a pitch, which the Marlins and others felt was done in retaliation for Brinson flipping his bat the night before after the Marlins rookie delivered a game-tying single in the ninth off Giants reliever Hunter Strickland.
