Marlins squander another opportunity against lowly Phillies

The offensive resurgence lasted only one game.

A day after the Marlins seemed to find their groove again at the plate, the bats went back to sleep on Sunday in a 3-1 extra-inning loss to the Phillies that further diminished their slim playoff chances.

The Phillies secured victory on the strength of a two-run single by Nick Williams in the top of the 12th inning off Junichi Tazawa. With runners on second and third and two outs, Williams lined a pitch to right field, allowing Ricardo Pinto and Cesar Hernandez to score.

The Marlins (67-69) had a chance to answer in the bottom of the inning when Giancarlo Stanton walked and Christian Yelich reached on a slow roller up the third-base line.
