Young players, walk-ons earn valuable playing time in Hurricanes’ first game

CORAL GABLES — As the Hurricanes pulled away from an overmatched Bethune-Cookman squad on Saturday, Miami coaches began substituting players, sitting the first-teamers for a mix of second-stringers, third-stringers, freshmen and walk-ons.

“We had some of our better runs when some of our backups got in,” UM offensive coordinator Josh Gattis said. “And so I think that’s a testament to building competition, but also it’s a testament to those guys preparing.”

Walk-ons kept the offense rolling late in the game. Devon Perry, who starred in Miami’s spring game, received five carries for 31 yards and scored a touchdown.
