Hurricanes edge rusher Akheem Mesidor earns national recognition for dominant game against Hokies

Akheem Mesidor has grown into one of the nation’s top defenders in his short time with the Hurricanes.

In his fifth game with Miami, the former West Virginia edge rusher was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and the ACC’s defensive lineman of the week following his 3.5-sack performance against the Hokies on Saturday in a 20-14 UM win.

Mesidor, a third-year sophomore, also led Miami with eight tackles in the victory.

Mesidor has been a force on the Hurricanes’ defensive line since arriving in the offseason. Although he missed one game with a minor injury, Mesidor is fourth on the team with 19 tackles and second on the team with six tackles for loss.
