For Mike Rumph, helping 'Canes get back on track a personal mission

After the unexpected death of his wife, Mike Rumph found himself raising their baby boy on his own.

And so, the young father turned to his family for help — his family, and sports. Lots and lots of sports.

He and his son, also named Mike, spent countless afternoons on baseball fields and basketball courts. There was even karate.

But it was football that captured the younger Mike Rumph's imagination and made him a star at Atlantic High in Delray Beach in the late 1990s. And though he had the opportunity to either run track or play basketball in college, it was football that made Rumph a national champion at the University of Miami and a first-round NFL draft pick.
