Elite Hurricanes: Miami men’s and women’s basketball teams punch tickets to NCAA quarterfinals

The question comes up whenever the Hurricanes succeed in basketball. Is Miami a basketball school now?

UM men’s coach Jim Larrañaga, who has been with the Hurricanes since 2011 and whose contract runs through 2026, got the question Friday night, and he has his own thoughts on the matter.

“I’ve heard people describe schools as football schools, basketball schools, whatever,” Larrañaga said. “My opinion is we’re a great academic institution. We’re one of the top 50 schools in the country. It’s a private school with an absolutely awesome campus. I was in the lobby last week with our cheerleaders and dance team.
