Computing future UM scholarship numbers a daunting task; QB Tyler Van Dyke, other freshmen excel behind the scenes

As the Miami Hurricanes football team pushes through the halfway point of the revised 2020 season, there are a lot of unknowns.

One big one is how scholarship numbers will stack up for future seasons, since this year will not be counted against player eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In other words, any seniors that want to return to college football in 2021 may do so. Juniors now will still be juniors (athletically) in 2021, and so on with sophomores and freshmen. With another freshman class coming in after the 2020 season, the NCAA will allow football teams to exceed the 85-scholarship limit in 2021 to welcome the incoming class while retaining upperclassmen that want to stay.
