Former Longhorns QB Thinks Charlie Strong Would Be Right Fit For Canes

The Miami Hurricanes are reportedly interested in Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong for the team's head coaching vacancy, and former Longhorns QB Chris Simms believes that a move by Strong to South Beach could be a "perfect" fit for both sides. Simms, who started at Texas back in the early 2000s, said as much during a recent radio appearance on CBS Miami.

“I think it would be a great fit,” Simms said on Hochman, Crowder and Krantz. “I really do. Listen, I love Texas but the way they treated Charlie Strong, I wouldn’t be mad if he just stuck up his middle finger to all the Texas people and said to hell with you, I’m going to the U and go dominate South Florida and become a national power."

Reports out of Austin have been mixed. Strong recently laughed when asked if such a move was possible, but sources around the program have indicated that he'd be willing to listen if the Canes come calling. To Simms, landing Strong would be a boon for a program current at one of the lowest points in its storied history.

“Charlie Strong recruited me when he was at Florida under Steve Spurrier," Simms said, "I love him. I think he’s an extremely direct, honest man, hard nosed football coach. I think he would actually be perfect for the University of Miami. I wish Texas would be patient with him and give him a chance.”

Strong is 10-12 over just under two seasons with the Longhorns. Before that, he was 36-15 in four seasons at Louisville with a 3-1 record in bowl games which includes a victory in the 2013 Sugar Bowl.
