Shaquille O’Neal, who played a central role in the team’s first NBA championship in 2006, will become the third player to have his jersey retired by the Miami Heat.
The Heat will retire his jersey in a ceremony at the beginning of the 2016-17 season, the team announced Tuesday.
“Shaquille O’Neal is one of the truly elite players in the history of the game and one of the greatest players to ever wear a Heat uniform,” said team president Pat Riley. “He took us to another level as a basketball franchise while leading us to our first NBA championship.
