MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami/AP) — Rookie Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made his NFL debut on Sunday but not before the team, led by Ryan Fitzpatrick, held the winless Jets back to get their first shutdown in six years, 24-0.
Fitzpatrick blocked on a running play, improvised a left-handed completion and led cheers for his replacement during mop-up time Sunday.
Fitzpatrick threw three touchdown passes against one of his many former teams.
“We’re still a work in progress, but we’re definitely heading in the right direction,” Fitzpatrick said.
Tagovailoa made his NFL debut as Fitzpatrick’s replacement with 2:27 left.
