COVID-19: Price gouging, robocalls, census scams prompt statewide warnings, crackdown

Moody’s office has issued nearly 70 subpoenas, deactivated more than 185 online posts, and secured over $275,000 in direct refunds for consumers to combat price gouging.

The Rapid Response Team that was set up to monitor price gouging has received more than 3,800 consumer complaints and has contacted merchants about 5,000 allegations of price gouging, refunds, and scams.

Violators of price gouging laws face fines of $1,000 per violation and up to a total of $25,000 for multiple violations committed in a single 24-hour period.

On another front, robocalls were a big problem before many Florida residents were forced to work from home, and now some may be duped by an increased frequency of phone calls with unfamiliar numbers.
