Tigers’ Season Ends in 15-2 Loss to UCF

CLEARWATER, Fla. – In what turned into their final game of the 2022 season the Memphis Tigers (26-29, 9-15) scored twice in the top of the first inning before the UCF Knights (34-24, 14-10) scored 15 unanswered runs as the Knights advanced to the AAC Championship semifinals with a 15-2 run-rule win in 6.5 innings.

How it happened:

  • The Tigers took the lead three batters into the game, as DH Jacob Compton launched a two-run home run to left field, his second consecutive game with a home run
  • Ahead 2-0 after half an inning, Memphis struggled to get outs in the home half of the frame, as Durham pitched to six batters and didn't record an out
  • DH Noah Orlando put UCF in front 3-2 with a three-run home run, 1B Ben McCabe made it 5-2 two batters later with a two-run home run, and after LHP Daniel Casto relieved Durham, RF Trent Taylor made it 6-2 Knights with a sacrifice fly
  • Memphis' offense didn't muster much over the final six innings, as only three Tigers reached base from the second through the sixth before they loaded the bases but came up empty in the seventh
  • UCF made it 7-2 in the second on 2B Tom Josten's RBI single, while the Knights batted around in the fourth, the second time in the game UCF sent 10 men to the plate
  • The first four Knights reached in the fourth against Casto before RHP Chase Kessinger entered from the Memphis bullpen
  • Orlando picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a single, while McCabe greeted Kessinger with a two-run single before UCF added two more in the frame to lead 12-2 after four innings
  • Litchfield fired four-scoreless innings in relief of LHP Cameron Craine (ND), while RHP Zack Hunsicker worked a perfect sixth inning before he stranded the bases loaded in the seventh, which ended the game with the run rule, 15-2

Notables:
