Home Runs and Strong Pitching Propel Memphis to Sweep over Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Between the resumption of Friday's game and the regularly scheduled Sunday matinee, the Memphis Tigers (9-4) dominated Sunday's matchups with the Samford Bulldogs (7-7). The Tigers plated three runs in their only trip to the plate in the resumption of Friday's game, an 8-5 win, and Memphis then run-ruled the Bulldogs 14-3 in eight innings in the regularly scheduled matchup.

Game 2, 7 Innings, resumption of suspended game

Memphis: 8, Samford: 5
WP: Blake Wimberley (1-1)
LP: Carson Hobbs (1-1)

How it happened:

  • Resuming Friday's suspended game, Wimberley remained in the game and stranded the go-ahead run in scoring position in the sixth inning, which kept the game tied 5-5
  • Samford went to Hobbs to start the seventh, but after he retired the first man he faced, five straight Tigers reached base
  • Memphis took the lead on an RBI groundout by LF Braden Webb and added runs on a double by CF Zach Wilson and sacrifice fly by SS Ben Brooks to lead 8-5
  • The Bulldogs nearly got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, as 2B Garrett Staton singled with one man on but was thrown out trying to turn a single into a double
  • Staton was thrown out at second base even though he wasn't the tying run, as the Bulldogs left the tying run walking up to the plate
