Mike Conley was spent. The Grizzlies were squandering an 18-point lead, their offense had sputtered and their defense was getting shredded when the exhausted point guard dribbled toward bench late in the second quarter the other night for what Conley assumed would be a called timeout. But David Fizdale never motioned for one. Instead, the Grizzlies’ first-year coach clasped his hands behind his back, looked Conley in the eyes and nodded for him to keep pushing. The message was clear. “We’re going to have to be in great shape to play like this and get where we want to go,” Conley said of the Grizzlies’ commitment to an up-tempo offense.
