Sports Digest (Aug. 6): Terps men's basketball tops Rome All-Stars, 89-53, to open Italy trip

In the first game of its three-game, 10-day trip to Italy, the Maryland men's basketball team beat the Rome All-Stars, 89-53, at Pala Fonte Roma Eur, about 45 minutes south of downtown Rome. Freshman Aaron Wiggins scored a team-high 17 points, sophomore Darryl Morsell (Mount Saint Joseph) had 14 and junior Anthony Cowan Jr. added 12 to lead the Terps. Maryland wasted no time getting on the board with a Cowan-to-Jalen Smith (Mount Saint Joseph) alley-oop just minutes into game. Freshman Eric Ayala kept the Terps ahead, hitting a 3-pointer and driving for a layup to give Maryland a 22-18 edge at the end of the first quarter.
