Maryland LB Jermaine Carter Jr. named to Butkus Award Watchlist

Following a breakout 2015 season, Maryland linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. was one of 51 players named to the Butkus Award Watchlist on Tuesday.

The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation's top linebacker. Former Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith won the award last season.

Carter emerged as a consistent playmaker in the middle of Maryland's defense last season and started all 12 games. As a redshirt sophomore, Carter earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors after he led the Terps with 103 tackles (66 solo) and ranked second with 14 tackles for loss.
