Entering the first round of the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament, sixth-seeded Maryland had nearly two weeks to stew over a loss in the Big Ten tournament final. The Terrapins wasted no time placing that disheartening result in the rear view, storming to a commanding first-quarter lead against visiting Fairfield in a 16-7 triumph Friday afternoon in College Park.
Maryland (15-5) got at a career-high five goals from sophomore attack Lauren LaPointe, and the defense yielded single-digit goals for the eighth time this season to spark the Terps to an 18th consecutive win in an NCAA tournament opener, including 10 in a row in the first round.
