CHARLOTTESVILLE — During several stretches Saturday night, the Maryland men’s basketball team played some of its most stifling defense to date this season. But those moments against No. 23 Virginia were not nearly enough to offset significant deficiencies at the other end of the court, lapses in ball security or the absence of starting center Pharrel Payne in an 80-72 loss at John Paul Jones Arena.
