Former Maryland men’s basketball star Derik Queen underwent surgery on a torn scapholunate ligament in his left wrist, the New Orleans Pelicans announced Friday. He will be re-evaluated in “approximately 12 weeks,” according to the team.
That timeline sets up Queen to be re-evaluated less than two weeks before the NBA’s season opener.
It’s a sudden and unfortunate end to the big man’s offseason, which had been on an upward trajectory. The 13th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft recorded double-doubles in each of his three NBA 2K26 Summer League appearances.
NBA stars Brandon Miller and Bradley Beal are two examples of players that suffered the same injury at the pro level.
