Byrd Stadium to become Maryland Stadium after regents vote

The University of Maryland's stadium will have a new name for the home of Terrapins football: Maryland Stadium.

The university system's Board of Regents voted Friday to strip the Harry C. "Curley" Byrd Stadium of its name, following a student-led push to find a new moniker for the facility. Byrd is known as a segregationist who opposed racial integration in the early days of the civil rights movement. Others point to the development of the university during his nearly 20-year tenure as president.

The 17-member board also agreed to impose a five-year moratorium on naming buildings after individuals.
