Third downs a cause for concern for both Marshall's offense and defense

HUNTINGTON — The sample is small and there was a third-ranked team to rain on Marshall’s third-down statistics. But there was also Morgan State to bolster them.

Not that the Thundering Herd did a good job on third downs in that 62-0 knee-slapper, either — two conversions in 11 attempts. Add that with the 6 of 17 against Akron and the 2 of 15 against No. 3 Louisville and you have … ugliness.

And you have the Herd offense at 23.3 percent, last in all of the Football Bowl Subdivision, from Boston College to Hawaii. MU is even getting topped by Florida International and Florida Atlantic, for Pete Garcia’s sake.
