HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Marshall’s oft-maligned defense hung tough with Southern Mississippi, but was hung out to dry Saturday night by an impotent offense.
The Thundering Herd was throttled most of the night, gaining just 226 total yards and 11 first downs in a 24-14 loss to the Golden Eagles on a warm night at M.M. Roberts Stadium. A homecoming crowd of 31,275 attended.
The result plunged Marshall (2-6, 1-3 Conference USA) to the brink of missing a bowl game for the first time since 2012. Southern Miss (5-3, 3-1) stayed a half-game behind leader Louisiana Tech in C-USA West Division race.
