HUNTINGTON — Shayna Gore scored 16 points, Ashley Saintigene had 11 and 10 rebounds, and McKenzie Akers scored 10 points Friday night, but for Marshall’s women’s basketball team, scoring wasn’t the important thing.
In the Thundering Herd’s 70-52 throttling of Florida International at Cam Henderson Center, it was all about the defense.
Afterward, MU coach Matt Daniel said, “I got hit five times on the way to the radio [postgame], ‘best defensive effort I’ve seen in a long time, best defensive effort I’ve seen in a long time.’”
The Herd (9-3, 1-0) wasn’t really threatened in the Conference USA opener for both teams, taking a 24-12 lead after the first quarter and rolling.
