Field goal unit work in progress for Marshall

HUNTINGTON — Of all Nick Smith’s field-goal attempts this spring, one was a three-phase disaster that went between the uprights anyway.

It even went over the crossbar. On a bounce. Won’t count for much in video critiques, but it would have been three points in a game.

The exchange underlines the difficulty Marshall faces in its field-goal game. The Thundering Herd has had to replace two of the three pieces of the process, the snapper and holder.

For the past several years, those roles were performed dependably by Matt Cincotta and Tyler Williams, respectively. Smith and his placekicking competitor, Amareto Curraj, are back, but the adjustment is still considerable.
